A precooler serves to cool down the smoke through an additional chamber filled with water. Thus, the smoke is much milder. Moreover, the pipe body itself remains cleaner as most of the residue is kept by the precooler. It's much easier to clean the bong precooler with its simpler designs than one of the elaborate glass or acrylic bongs, especially if they have a very bubbly body or a bent neck.
Precoolers are commonly made from glass, sometimes from acrylic plastic. They serve as cooling devices for the smoke and at the same time as a kind of filter to minimize the pollution of the bong itself. They are placed just below the bowl as a preliminary filter system and are also good for an additional cooling effect.
